Sydney Backyard Ultra Recap 🏃‍♀️

Result: 110 km in 16 hours

Race Format: 6.7 km on the hour, every hour until there’s only one left standing.

Race Recap: I had my sights set on 256.7 km (1% of Australia's map) but life had other plans! Whilst my legs and mind were strong, my stomach was not and after 3 hours of battling with an upset stomach, I couldn’t complete my 17th lap. It was a very disappointing result for me . To train so hard, feel so strong, and be sidelined by an upset stomach tough especially given my legs weren’t even sore the following day but I know I need to take what I can from the experience to better prepare next time.

Highlights: An awesome event by 180cadence – so well ran and organised and such a great course and vibes. Big thanks to my amazing Mum for flying to Syd to be here as support and my friend Andrei who was there from start to finish helping keep me (and my friend Shane) fuelled and motivated. Thanks also to Monique, Nikolay, Kostya, John Chate (past Australian Lions Hearing Dog state Director), Ian, and Monty for your help and for coming to cheer me on.

Key Learnings: Ultra running is about more than just fitness and mindset—it’s a complex balance of factors, including nutrition and pacing. I’m still new to the world of trail and ultra running, and I know I need to work on refining my nutrition strategy and race-day prep for the future especially in a Backyard Ultra format.

Fundraising Update: Thanks to the incredible generosity of all who donated, we’ve now raised over $3,000 for Australian Lions Diabetic Alert Dogs! These dogs are true superheroes changing the lives of people with Type 1 Diabetes 🐾

While I didn’t achieve my distance goal this time, I’ll continue running in my Lap the Map singlet in coming weeks, raising awareness and funds leading up to National Diabetes Day on 14th November 🧡🐶

Why I am aiming to run 257.6 kms in 39 hours

In the lead up to World Diabetes Day on 14th November Australian Lions Hearing Dogs is inviting it’s supporters to collectively lap the map of Australia 10 times to raise awareness and funds towards  the Australian Lions Diabetic Alert Dog program, providing Assistance Dogs to people with type 1 diabetes, at no cost.

I am setting myself an epic challenge of attempting to run 1% of Australia’s map over 1 weekend.

On 5th October (and hopefully 6th October as well) I will be participating in Sydney’s Backyard Ultra event where runners must run the same 6.7km loop on the hour every hour until there is only one person left standing.

I am attempting to run for 39 hours and clock up over 257.6 kms (1% of Australia’s circumference).

This challenge is going to be ‘ruff’ but i've seen the life changing work these super hero dogs do in alerting low blood sugar levels as well as retrieving hypokits to treat a low or high glucose event and seeking assistance in emergency either through alerting another household member or seriously impressively pressing an alert button to call emergency services if their owner falls unconscious when they are home alone.

I am going to attept to run for 39 hours and am asking people to sponsor a lap for $257 or a km for $37.

If each lap is sponsored we will raise over $10,000 for the life changing work of the Australian Lions Medical Alert Dog program.
